I am so excited to start a new year with you all! As we begin our first full week, please make sure that you have a good book to read because the first book report is due on September 29th.
Let's have a fantastic year together! Please continue to check this page for updates throughout the year.

Welcome back! I hope you all enjoyed your spring break and are ready to get back to learning. Here are a few important things to know for this month.
The Science Fair will be held on Friday, April 28th. You will have time to work on the written portion in class, but most experiments will need to take place at home or during break. As a class, we will be reading The Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain. There will be required reading at home, fun learning activities, and comprehension quizzes along the way. I will ask that we all stay together without reading ahead. Last but not least, we will begin state testing. Remember to eat healthy food, stay hydrated, and get plenty of sleep. Challenge yourself to do your best work! Read, read, read! This month you will have a book report, so pick out a good book and start reading! Don't forget to put it in your backpack so that you can read it at home and at school.
We will be writing a narrative story for language arts. Think of a story that you would like to write about your life. You will have the opportunity to "publish" and share with the class and possibly your kinder buddy! Hopefully we will have time to work on the timeline for Coburg. Hone in your artistic skills so that we can create a beautiful piece of historical art for the park in our community. Work hard this month! Spring Break is just around the corner! I hope you all had a fabulous, extra-long, winter break! I look forward to hearing about your adventures and sharing my own from Japan. Thank you so much for all of the gifts and treats. You all are so thoughtful and I appreciate the kindness.
Please make sure to have a book picked out for your January book report. After you have finished reading the book, please use the book report format on Google (the same as used in November) to complete the report. This will be due on Monday, January 30th. We will be working on a writing work sample in the month of January. Get ready to write a persuasive essay! As you know, we were unable to announce Secret Santas because of the ice storm, so we will need to do that this week. Let me know if you have any creative ideas to make the announcement. If you brought holiday decorations, please make sure that you bring them home this week. Thank you and welcome back! I hope you all had a relaxing three-day weekend. Hopefully many of you took advantage of the stormy weather to read, read, read! The month is half over, so you should be at least to the middle of your October book. We will be working on the book report project during class over the next couple of weeks so please stay on top of your reading and have the book finished by October 28th.
We will continue reading and writing poetry in language arts. Be prepared to analyse a famous poem and share your interpretations with the class. The following week we will take an in-depth look at Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven!" Just in time for Halloween! With the elections on the horizon, our focus in social studies will shift to this historic event. Many of you have expressed great interest in this topic and have kept up with current events, including many of the recent debates. I encourage you to continue talking with your families about the important issues of this election. Our focus in class will be on democracy, voting, and the United States government. Tolerance and respect are required! Finally, I am excited to continue with our eyesight study in science. Keep thinking critically and asking insightful questions. Thank you for your patience as I learn this new curriculum. Have a fabulous week! We will continue our study of poetry this week. Get ready to learn about figurative language, read great poetry, and continue to write poetry of your own.
Desert projects will be due this week. Remember that good slides have fewer words and are easy to read. Check to make sure that the pictures you choose are not distracting to the audience. In other words, will the audience be able to read the slide from anywhere in the classroom? Be ready to share what you learned with the class! Finally, in science we will continue to focus on our eyes and how they function. We will begin with optical illusions. Remember great scientists always ask questions! Keep learning and have a fabulous week! Hope you had a fabulous weekend!
A parent asked a great question at Curriculum Night about grades and late work. Since StudentVUE will be available in the near future (hopefully this week) I would like to take this opportunity to make my expectations clear on assignments. As you may already know, any assignment posted on Google Classroom will freeze on the due date. The system will not allow changes to be made afterward, so whatever has been completed at that time will be graded accordingly. All other assignments will have a due date listed on the homework board. Please try to get work turned in by that time. Points will be deducted from any late work and I will only accept late work for a week after the due date. Remember, some credit is better than no credit at all, so turn in your assignments! If something comes up that will prohibit you from turning in assignments on time (illness, emergency, travel, etc.) please talk to me and I can make an extension. After receiving the login information for StudentVUE, please check grades at least every week. I can make mistakes, so it would be wise to hold onto graded work until you know it has been entered into the system correctly. Remember that organization is your key to success this year. Stay focused, and work to your full potential! I hope you all had a lovely weekend!
I hope you had a fantastic summer and are eager for the upcoming school year. In lieu of newsletters, I will be posting important information and classroom news on this website. Please check it out throughout the month to keep up to date.
Now that summer is officially over, we all have to get back into the routine of school. The first couple of weeks will be devoted to community building, procedures, and expectations. Please support your child by checking their planner, setting aside time in the evening for quiet reading and homework, providing nutritious snacks and plenty of water, and getting to bed early. Thank you and I look forward to another incredible school year! |
